“Hygge” - Creating Coziness

“Hygge”, derived from a Norwegian word for “well-being”, isn’t just a word; it’s a concept.  There is really no direct translation.  A Danish term that embodies all our best of ideas of coziness, comfort, conviviality and contentment, “hygge” is about surrounding yourself with the things that make life good.

In the long, cold and dark Danish winters, it is important to create a warm and happy indoor place.  “Hygge” embodies a feeling of comfort, contentment, and well-being through simple and everyday experiences and an appreciation for life’s small pleasures like friendship, laughter and security.

Used as both a noun and adjective in Denmark, “hygge” is a way of life.  In describing things as “hyggelig” (hygge-like), Danes are also obsessed with adding “hygge” to other words to describe things.  “Hyggekrog” is essentially a nook where you can get cozy by a window seat where you can wrap yourself up in a blanket.  Danes burn a whopping 13 pounds of candle wax a year per capita — more than any other country in the world. They will likely to tell you that candles are the most important part of creating a “hyggelig” atmosphere at home.

“Hygge” is all about keeping things simple by remembering how to appreciate the simple things that bring joy to your life.  By taking time to appreciate the small moments, we can become more mindful and present.  It helps us to focus on what truly matters by fostering a sense of contentment and fulfillment.
